Why A Batman Beyond Movie Is Still A Good Idea

When one thinks of legendary DC Comics hero Batman, naturally who comes to mind is Bruce Wayne, the first individual to don the mantle of the Caped Crusader. Many actors have put their own stamp on the character over the decades, and it was recently announced that with Ben Affleck stepping down for the role, a younger, but still well-known actor, will succeed him for Matt Reeves The Batman. However, Bruce isnt the only person to go by Batman in DC's mythology.

One of the other popular characters to wear the mask is Terry McGinnis, star of the animated series Batman Beyond. It was recently rumored that a Batman Beyond animated movie in the works, although that rumor has since been shot down. Regardless, Warner Bros would be smart to make a Batman Beyond movie, whether its live action or animated, because it can put the legend of the Dark Knight through a fresh lens that still hasnt been explored yet on the big screen.

On the off chance Batman Beyond has never popped up on your radar in the late 90s and early 2000s, the series two-part premiere, "Rebirth," opened with a middle-aged Bruce Wayne, now wearing a technologically-advanced Batsuit, suffering a heart attack during a rescue mission and was forced to pull a gun on a criminal about to kill him. Horrified that he had to rely on a gun, something he swore hed never do, Bruce retired as Batman, vowing, Never again. That moment occurred 20 years ahead of when Batman Beyond premiered on TV, i.e. 2019. Yes, this year! Does that make you feel old? But I digress.

20 years after that, Bruce meets a teenager named Terry McGinnis, who ends up at Wayne Manor while fleeing from a gang of Jokers. The two of them dispatch the clownish goons, and when Terry helps Bruce back to his house, he accidentally discovers the Batcave, much to Bruces anger. Soon after, Terry discovers that his fathers been murdered and wants revenge on the man responsible (Warren McGinnis employer, Wayne Enterprises CEO Derek Powers, who would become Blight). Terry then snuck back into the Batcave and stole the Batsuit, and while Bruce was initially opposed to helping Terry, he eventually realized the boy had potential. From there the two began a partnership, with Terry acting as the new Batman out in the field and Bruce feeding him advice and intel from back at the Batcave.

Terry McGinnis has built quite the following of DC fans since he was introduced 20 years ago, and since the start of the decade, hes led various comic book series and even briefly returned to screen for an animated short in 2014 made for Batmans 75th anniversary. However, the character still has yet to make the jump to the big screen, although a live action movie was briefly in development after Batman Beyond premiered. To me, sitting on the Batman Beyond property is a waste of cinematic potential. The Batman Beyond universe is unique enough that it can give moviegoers something new, yet still feeling like classic Batman. Best of all, it doesnt have to conflict with whats being done in the DCEU.

The fact that Warner Bros is released Joker, a 1980s-set origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime starring Joaquin Phoenix means that the studio is open to telling out-of-continuity DC stories. Batman Beyond can easily be handled that way. Matt Reeves can still handle his Batman film series however he chooses, but another filmmaker can play around in a futuristic, Blade Runner-looking Gotham City where the Terry McGinnis Batman is fighting villains like Inque and Shriek with advanced technology, but also using tactics the original Batman relied on. At its best, the Batman Beyond movie would be a visual, cyberpunk spectacle wrapped around a compelling, noir narrative. And, needless to say, it could spawn numerous sequels, although obviously the creative team tackling a Batman Beyond movie should focus first on making a good standalone feature, not on setting up the future.

If the Batman Beyond movie were to be a live action adaptation, this is a great opportunity to bring back Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, an idea thats been repeatedly suggested online. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Tim Burtons Batman, and 27 years since he made his final appearance as the Dark Knight in Batman Returns. While hes not quite as old as Bruce is during Batman Beyond, Keaton could still effectively play a Bruce who has been retired from crimefighting for a long time, and then reluctantly takes Terry McGinnis under his wing. It wouldnt be absolutely necessary to reference events from Keatons previous Batman movies, but the actors inclusion would at least hammer home that feeling of legacy further.

On the other hand, if Batman Beyond were to be turned into an animated movie, as was originally rumored, it could take a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse-like approach. Not in the sense that we would see Bat-heroes from across the multiverse joining forces (although that would be a blast), but passing along the message that Batman isnt an identity belonging to just one person. Like Bruce Wayne, Terry McGinnis has suffered through tragedy, but he uses those losses and his anger to fight for justice and strike terror into the hearts of criminals. And, as we we saw with the original Batman Beyond animated series, its still possible to tell a mature story within PG parameters. This isnt The LEGO Batman Movie; even if you want Batman Beyond to be family-friendly, the story still needs to be infused with some darkness.

Some of you might be feeling oversaturated with Batman stories across all media, and thats fair. Hes the DC Comics superhero whos been adapted the most across the decades, and theres no sign of that dying down anytime soon. But Batman Beyond isnt just another standard Batman story. Yes, some of those familiar elements are there, but Terry McGinnis isnt a Bruce Wayne knockoff. Hes his own man whos distinguished himself from the original Batman in various ways, and after two decades of TV and comic book appearances, its about time that he snags the spotlight on the big screen, even if its just to spice things up a bit in the Batman film world.

The Crows Director Opens Up About Leaving The Movie

There are some things you just have to accept you'll probably never see in your lifetime: world peace, light speed, and a reboot of The Crow. A remake of the 1994 film from director Alex Proyas, based on the comic book series by James O'Barr, has been in development hell so long it basically owns the joint. The latest iteration of The Crow was all set to start shooting soon for an October 2019 release date when, a few days ago, star Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy left the project. The director has now opened up about his love for the property and the difficult decision to leave the film saying:

I knew from the off, that the idea of making a new version of The Crow was never going to be for everyone, because it is a beloved film. And I say that as someone in love with it myself. But I poured everything I had into the last 3.5 years of work, to try & create something which honoured what the Crow stood for; from James O'Barr's affecting graphic novel, to Alex Proyas's original movie, with great respect to Brandon Lee and with the desire to make something bold and new, that myself, as an obsessive fan, could be proud of. And with @prideofgypsies Jason Momoa, and my amazing team of artists & film-makers, we came SO close. But sometimes, when you love something so much, you have to make hard decisions. And yesterday, deciding it was time to let go of this dark & emotional dream project, was the hardest decision of all. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever.

As sad as it is for fans of The Crow that this franchise's resurrection will once again be postponed, it is made even sadder reading Corin Hardy's words. While remakes are always a tricky proposition and not all fans are interested in a remake of The Crow, you can see that Corin Hardy was coming at this from the right place, wanting to do justice to the beloved iterations of the character that have come before, while also delivering something new. As he notes in his Instagram post, this movie was so close to happening, with shooting set to begin in just five weeks and a big name actor attached to star as Eric Draven. If ever it was going to happen this seemed like the time, so to have it fall apart at the last minute after putting in years of work must be truly devastating.

Corin Hardy doesn't go into it but it seems that Davis Films, that owns the rights and was financing The Crow, could not come to terms with Sony Pictures for distribution and that writing on the wall seems to be what lead to the exits of Jason Momoa and Corin Hardy. Hardy's earnest words about what he wanted to do with The Crow and the concept art Jason Momoa shared certainly makes the sting of this abrupt collapse all the worse as we now have some idea of the exciting vision they had for this movie.

Making the decision to leave a dream project is quite sad,and it makes you wonder if this didn't get done this time, will it ever? While I think a lot of people are curious and would like to see a new take on The Crow, perhaps it is best to let it go. For now, it seems we will have to wait and see if this is salvaged in some way. If not, we can look forward to the next rumblings of a remake followed by a succession of directors and actors only for it all to amount to nothing. Then again, if Terry Gilliam can finally get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote made, there is always hope and you can never say never.

The horror genre has been on a serious upswing in the few years, as studios continue to make tons of money while also producing critically acclaimed new installments. Blumhouse Productions has been behind many recent hits, and is turning its sights on the classics with Halloween. Arriving in theaters this October, the new Halloween will ignore all of the franchise's sequels, and bring back Jamie Lee Curtis as OG scream queen Laurie Strode. But there's another original star returning, as actor/director Nick Castle will once again be putting on Michael Myers' mask for a few scenes, sharing the role with stunt man James Jude Courtney. Castle recently revealed another way he contributed to the role, saying:

In the new one, if there's any interest in comparisons, I do all the ADR breathing for The Shape even though I'm only in it in a cameo.

Does anyone else have chills? While Michael Myers is mute villain, the audience and his victims only hear him through the muffled breathing behind his signature mask. And now the man who created the signature sound and character is providing Michael's breathing once again.

Nick Castle's comments to Bloody Disgusting are definitely going to excite the hardcore Halloween fans out there, who have seen John Carpenter's legendary film countless times. Nick Castle's emotionless characterization of Michael Myers created a phenomenon, and its a performance that other actors have attempted through the various sequels. Castle once again voicing The Shape's creepy breath is the ultimate fan service, and adds yet another connection to the 1978 classic.

Ever since Blumhouse announced Halloween's development, with Jamie Lee Curtis in tow, it's been clear that the team has a reverence for John Carpenter's classic. Director David Gordon Green and writer Danny McBride are approaching the movie inspired by Carpenter's sensibilities, relying more on tension than all out gore or violence. And by defying the canon, Blumhouse's Halloween can craft a brand new story, and a brand new version of Laurie Strode.
