What Frozen 2 Might Actually Be About

The first Frozen 2 trailer broke records and got fans scrambling for answers in a way they normally reserve for Avengers trailers. Why did the trailer start with Elsa battling a dark ocean wave? What's with the snowflake symbols? Where were Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven going? Well, questions still remain, but two Disney podcasters just shared what details they had on the film's plot:

If you don't want to know what Frozen 2 is about, skip ahead. But, if you're there -- if we're all consenting adults listening to the plot of Frozen 2 -- it is about Anna and Elsa searching for what actually happened to their parents.

Aha! I thought that might be part of it. That plot detail has yet to be confirmed by Disney or the filmmakers, but ... it always felt like they had unfinished business with Elsa and Anna's parents. They were said to have died in a shipwreck due to a storm at sea, but we never got details in Frozen.

But what does that have to do with the snowflake symbols?

Fine Tooning Disney insiders Drew Taylor and Jim Hill expanded on the "assist from Josh Gad" on Twitter, when the Olaf voice actor had said the snowflake poster revealed some "surprises":

If you look at the snowflake, I guess there are four symbols that each correspond with the Gregorian calendar seasons. And the assumption is now -- and this could be why there's so much marketing with the fall leaves -- that Elsa can control all of the seasons, that it's not just winter and snow, that she has kind of dominion over everything, which I think is a very cool idea.

There was already speculation that the symbols might represent the seasons. It sounds like they are talking about the "assumption" that Elsa can control all the seasons, rather than revealing that as another scoop. I was thinking they might meet other people in different lands who had different powers. Interesting. We'll see.

My own pet theory was that the two new characters we saw in an autumn-like scene were Elsa and Anna's parents in a flashback. I was wondering if their mom had autumn-like powers -- like wind or whatnot. That may not be true on any level. But we do know our familiar Frozen characters are going beyond Arendelle in their search for answers. And that first trailer scene of Elsa fighting waves must be connected to the secrets of the shipwreck.

CinemaBlend's own Dirk Libbey had theorized that Elsa's own powers would be at the center of Frozen 2, with that opening scene maybe showing Elsa testing her powers, trying to accomplish some specific task with her abilities. It would make sense for that task to be related to finding out the truth about her parents.

Frozen 2 will probably give us more clues to this story in later trailers and cast interviews. There's still a long wait ahead, since the movie opens in theaters November 22, 2019. Here's what else is playing in theaters during this busy and exciting year.

One creative decision that might have damaged Sony's attempts at staging their own Spider-Man movies (with Andrew Garfield AND Tobey Maguire) was the complaint about there being too many villains for the hero to focus on. You couldn't just get Sandman, for example, the studio also wanted Venom -- even though Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi reportedly was opposed. So on the heels of the news that Mysterio will be a villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, it's slightly concerning to hear that Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as The Vulture as well.

This was a line included in Variety's coverage of the news that Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play master illusionist Mysterio in the anticipated Spider-Man sequel. The trade says that Michael Keaton will reprise his role of Adrian Toomes. That's all that is stated, and it leaves the door open to a number of different options, which we can break down.

The following will dive deep into spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the MCU in general.

When Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming ended, the Vulture (Keaton) was sent to prison. But in a post-credits stinger, Toomes was confronted by another convict, Mac Gargan (Michael Mando), who in the comics would go on to become the Scorpion. Gargan even has scorpion tattoos on his neck. The criminal wants to know Spidey's true identity, though Toomes refuses to give Peter Parker (Tom Holland) up. Perhaps because Peter saved Toomes' life on the beach.

So, is Michael Keaton coming back for a prison-based cameo? Could there be a breakout with Vulture and Scorpion that's separate from whatever plot Mysterio is working? And... hey, how is Sony planning on doing all of this, since Spider-Man DIED at the end of Avengers: Infinity War? Here's Toomes staring down Gargan, and sticking up for Spidey:

Part of me likes the fact that the Spider-Man universe is being peppered with these creative villains. Spidey has an incredible Rogue's Gallery of adversaries, and after one movie, Vulture, the Tinkerer and a Shocker all are in play. There have been rumors that Black Cat or Kraven could be added to next summer's sequel, but the Mysterio news has placed the focus squarely on Quentin Beck as Peter's next project. That is... if he can come back from the dead.

We have plenty of time to find out just how involved Michael Keaton will be in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 (or whatever Sony ends up calling it). The Joaquin Phoenix-fronted Joker movie is officially happening over at DC, with an October 4, 2019 release date finally set in stone. That said, Jared Leto is still in place as the DCEU's Joker, leaving some to wonder how two Clown Princes of Crime could co-exist on the silver screen. With all of that in mind, Clerks director and all-around DC guru Kevin Smith opened up at San Diego Comic-Con and admitted that we should count ourselves lucky that we're getting two big screen Jokers. Smith explained:

When I was growing up, we had no Joker movies, and you were lucky if you got a Batman movie, and the Joker was usually in that. But think about it now, it's a world full of comic book movies. We've seen all the big guns and all the main characters. Aquaman's coming down the pike this summer, that's tremendous. But in that world, why not single out one of the most famous comic book villains, most famous bad guys of all time, the Joker?

He has a point. There was a time when a superhero movie would only debut once every few years. The era of Tim Burton's Batman was decidedly different compared to the post-Marvel Cinematic Universe world, and now we're in an era in which the superhero landscape has become saturated with more obscure characters like Iron Man and Aquaman. Given the context of this landscape, Kevin Smith seems to think that it only makes sense for DC to go all in on its biggest villain and invest in multiple Joker stories -- the Joaquin Phoenix movie currently in development, as well as the Jared Leto-fronted Joker projects set for the DCEU.

Another thing worth noting is the fact that the idea of multiple Joker movies feels very much in line with what the comic book genre has done time and time again over the years. Elsewhere in his interview with Variety at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Smith noted that those who can't keep track of this type of split continuity have no place in the comic book movie world, as this type of storytelling continually pops up in the pages of DC Comics.

That move towards the style of an actual comic book method of storytelling is something that the genre hasn't really seen before, and as Kevin Smith pointed out: that distinction from the current MCU method could help DC in the long run after a series of missteps. Smith explained:

To me, it smells like a step in the right direction. They've taken a lot of crap for all the movies they've made so far not being as good as the Marvel movies, because they've been trying to make them in the Marvel method.

Lastly, we should mention the fact that DC isn't hurting for content outside of the realm of The Joker. San Diego Comic-Con was full of amazing DC updates, including the trailer for Aquaman and the trailer for Shazam! These more obscure characters are taking on far more prominent roles in the DC world, but Joker will arguably always be a major fixture worthy of this many films.
