How Shooting Star Wars: Episode IX Is Different From The Other Movies, According To Oscar Isaac

It was just a few years ago that we were introduced to Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron and all the other major new players of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but following The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, this era of a galaxy far, far away will conclude in late 2019 with the release of Episode IX. For this last chapter, J.J. Abrams returned to the director's chair, and Isaac has noticed that this time around, shooting has felt more laid back. The actor said:

The way they've been shooting it right now is looser than it's been for the last two times. It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, 'Oh, we can try things.' It's a testament to J.J. coming back and feeling confident. There's less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.

Oscar Isaac has been keeping busy lately with projects like The Addams Family animated movie and Triple Frontier, and currently he's deep into principal photography on Star Wars: Episode IX. As Isaac informed Indiewire, he plans on taking the next year off once Episode IX has wrapped, but for now, he hasn't been too worn down working on the space opera blockbuster. Sure the goal is to give audiences a great movie, but under J.J. Abrams' direction, Isaac feels that there's been less pressure and more opportunities to improvise.

J.J. Abrams was brought in to usher a new era of Star Wars cinematic history with The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson filled his shoes on The Last Jedi. Although Abrams initially didn't plan on returning to the Star Wars franchise once The Force Awakens was done, after Colin Trevorrow exited Episode IX due to creative differences, Abrams stepped in to helm and co-write the project.

Given that The Force Awakens was the first live action Star Wars movie to be released since Revenge of the Sith a decade earlier, it's understandable that there was a lot of pressure to get this grand return right. But it's good to hear that for Episode IX, there's more of a relaxed feel on set. This is the last time these talents will be together working on a Star Wars project, so shouldn't they try to be more innovative and have a little extra fun?

Thus far, plot details for Star Wars: Episode IX are under wraps, although there's been no shortage of rumors and speculation about what's in store for Poe Dameron and the rest of the main cast. However, they'll be joined by plenty of newcomers, with Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie, Dominic Monaghan and Matt Smith all being added to the lineup, as well as Billy Dee reprising Lando Calrissian for his first theatrical appearance since Return of the Jedi.

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame.

It's almost hard to believe, but Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for nearly two months. Anticipation for The Russo Brothers' blockbuster was at a fever pitch when it arrived in April, especially given the wild events of Infinity War before it. But the co-directors delivered on all their promises, and crafted an unpredictable movie that was begging to be re-watched on the big screen.

Moviegoers did just that, experiencing the Time Heist and insane final battle more than once. What resulted was massive box office numbers, with Endgame sitting just below Avatar for the highest grossing movie of all time. And now Kevin Feige was revealed the way that record could be toppled: by re-releasing a new cut of Endgame in theaters, complete with new footage. He recently revealed this, saying:

We are doing that. I don't know if it's been announced. And I don't know how much... Yeah, we're doing it next weekend

Honestly, just take my money. Disney's handling of the MCU has been pretty flawless throughout Phase Three, and now the House of Mouse pulled out another trick, in the form of an extended cut of Avengers: Endgame.

Kevin Feige revealed the plans for Endgame's second release to Comic Book, while doing press for Spider-Man: Far From Home. While somewhat shocking, it's a revelation that makes sound business sense. And it's not like there isn't plenty of footage that ended up on the cutting room floor of the 181-minute epic.

The Russo Brothers shot Infinity War and Endgame back to back, and shot a ton of material that never actually made it into the theatrical cut. The editing process is key to any release, but especially such a complicated and crossover-heavy story like Endgame. There's 900 hours of footage to comb through, although smart money says the new cut will include deleted scenes that almost made it into the final film.

A new cut of Avengers: Endgame guarantees the hardcore fandom will be flocking back to theaters, to see what Marvel Studios cooked up this time. It's a great placeholder to satiate moviegoers until the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and will also give Endgame the final box office boost it needs. The 22nd MCU installment is around $40 million behind James Cameron's Avatar, so the re-release is coming at a perfect time.

News of the new Avengers: Endgame release is sure to excite the hardcore fandom, and it should be fascinating to see what new footage gets added to the blockbuster. Smart money says the final battle will be extended, as there's probably even more action that didn't make it into the film. Maybe we'll finally see Kraglin? But overall the movie goes so many places, that any of its three acts has room for expansion. We'll just have to see when that new version of the blockbuster makes it to theaters.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum just had a -- wait for it -- killer opening weekend at the box office. That's important for world-building reasons. It not only makes another sequel more likely, it bodes well for The Continental TV series that's still in development at Starz and the spinoff movie that was discussed two years ago.

Do you remember that spinoff movie?

Back in 2017, it was announced that the John Wick franchise might be getting a spinoff movie called Ballerina. The script was being written by Shay Hatten, who is also credited as one of the writers of Parabellum. The story was said to follow a young woman raised as an assassin who must hunt down the other assassins that murdered her family. It was described, at the time, as being akin to La Femme Nikita, but with a "more pulpy, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn."

That was then. Fast-forward to 2019 and John Wick 3 just introduced Anjelica Huston as The Director, who also runs an academy that turns ballerinas into assassins. Putting two and two together, THR asked director Chad Stahelski if it was safe to say her introduction set up the Ballerina spinoff. Here's Stahelski's reply:

I think if you read Shays script and you look into the characters in that, youd find your answer.

Not having seen Shay Hatten's script, it still seems pretty safe to say the answer is "yes." A lot can happen in two years to change a story, but the franchise-best box office success of John Wick 3 -- not to mention approval from both critics and fans -- suggests this spinoff has a great chance of moving forward. There are plenty of questions on how it would play out, including whether Anjelica Huston would be a main star and if Keanu Reeves would cameo at all. But we can add it to the list of spinoff/sequels from here.

(For the record, that long-gestating TV spinoff set at the L.A. Continental hotel is meant to have at least a Keanu Reeves cameo, and possibly a voice-over from Winston actor Ian McShane.)

John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski also talked to THR about the third chapter sharing more background on Jonathan's own origin story. In a section of his answer, he also touched on things that might be relevant to the Ballerina spinoff:

... As far as backstory goes, everything you need to know about John is in Parabellum. We hid it very well and hopefully, youll watch this movie three or four times. You may not care, and if you do care, when you watch The Directors scenes and you see the girls, and you put two and two together with the tattoos and the crucifixes, the kind of martial arts he does, who he talks to, what languages he speaks, you can piece together a fairly comprehensive background on where John came from and what his upbringing was like. I give the audience a lot of credit; hopefully, they can piece it together and they like piecing it together. Its like a book; thats why we numbered the movies as chapters...

Dark Phoenix's problems are now the stuff of legend. It had the worst opening of the X-Men franchise, by a lot, and it stands to lose around $100 million. Director Simon Kinberg is taking responsibility for the flop, and we can add this new disappointment to the list.

Dark Phoenix just had the lowest second week drop of any superhero movie. It earned $14 million on its opening day last Friday, and $2.348 million on its second Friday. That's a drop of 83.2%, relieving DC's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and its 81% drop for the title. (Finally, some good news for BvS!)

As Forbes noted, Dark Phoenix's 83.2% drop from Friday-to-Friday was just shy of the 84% drop for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II in its second Friday. Of course, one major difference there is fans had already rushed to see the final Harry Potter movie, giving it an opening weekend of $169 million in July 2011. Dark Phoenix only had an opening weekend of $33 million.

On the list of other big movies (as opposed to indies), High School Musical 3 had a 90% drop on its second Friday, but that also happened to be Halloween night.

As of Sunday, Dark Phoenix could potentially see a full second weekend drop of around 74%. That would also be the biggest second weekend drop of any major superhero movie. (It makes Brightburn's 70.5% drop look less bad now, so that's another positive.) Then again, that's projecting from the huge second Friday drop, expecting a weekend tally of only $8.63 million. Box Office Mojo and Box Office Pro were predicting Dark Phoenix to make something around $13 million this weekend.

Dark Phoenix is the final movie in the X-Men series as we know it. Fans are hoping for good things to come in the MCU, but this was Simon Kinberg's chance to take the franchise out with a bang. This latest stab at telling The Dark Phoenix Saga was plagued with production problems, rewrites, and reshoots. But at least Kinberg is content with the final product, telling KCRW he's happy with the movie and had an "amazing time" making it. Also, some fans are defending Dark Phoenix, or at least pointing out that they liked it more than Apocalypse.

It's already been noted that, if Dark Phoenix wants to salvage this run at all, it's most likely to come from the international box office. Going into this weekend, Dark Phoenix has a total worldwide tally of $148.8 million. A full $103.7 million of that has come from the foreign box office.
