11 Recent Best Picture Losers That Could Have Won The Popular Oscar

11 Recent Best Picture Losers That Could Have Won The Popular Oscar

Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that for the first time in history, they would be working on crafting a category solely focused on achievement in popular film. Naturally, this drew the ire of the internet and film community, as this seems to be a move that rewards box office grosses over actual achievement. However, where some see a dark cloud over an already chaotic awards ceremony, there's also an interesting potential for a thought experiment.

For this hypothetical scenario, let's use the prism of history to see how this potential category could have played out in the last 10 years of Best Picture history. Operating on the popular presumption that this "Popular Oscar" is going to be a Best Picture-adjacent category, we can apply this assumption to the last decade of films that were nominated, minus one notable exception. The results are rather interesting, and definitely worth discussion, so here we go with 10 years worth of alternative Oscar history, as we retroactively hand out the awards for "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking."

2008 - JunoWhile No Country For Old Men's Best Picture win feels like one of those wins that satisfied both the artistic and somewhat popular tendencies that Oscar voters tend to try and steer for, if there WAS an award for "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking," you can bet that Juno would have won it. A film that not only dominated the pop culture landscape during its awards qualifying run, but also brought Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman together for the first time, the indie hipster romantic dramedy built probably the most vocal fan base of all the films nominated that year. Also, the Best Original Screenplay win for Cody's script kind of tips towards the odds being in this one's favor.

2009 - The Dark KnightIn the context of this list, we've stayed mostly with the losers who were nominated for the highest honors of their year: Best Picture. And yet, when it comes to 2009's class of notables, none cast quite as impressive a shadow as The Dark Knight. Considering this is the film that, if you wanted to trace this issue to a starting point, began The Academy's various actions in the name of popularity, it's a no-brainer addition to the pack. This is the textbook case of a movie so popular that when "serious" awards bodies don't pay it enough attention, they're decried as too traditional. Christopher Nolan's best Batman movie is a true blend of artistic merit, and blockbuster thrills, sealing the deal on this film's hypothetical win in spades.

2010 - AvatarWhen you're the biggest cinematic money maker of all time, the eyes of the world are going to be on you like a hawk. Already having done that once with his critical, commercial, and awards juggernaut Titanic, James Cameron somehow did it again when Avatar was released to the public. Now, while there's been debate about the story's originality, there's no question that the technical marvels that were on display. Plus, the film's IMAX 3D presentation helped revolutionize theatrical distribution. The way movies were made, and seen, was changed for the better, and with audiences flocking in droves to see it for themselves, no other film that year could match its appeal.

2011 - InceptionOn this alternate timeline, Christopher Nolan is a previous "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking" winner, having already cemented his legacy after scoring on this award with 2008's The Dark Knight. We're guessing he would have won his second round in this very category with Inception. With another mix of blockbuster spectacle, seen through the prism of high art and concept, the box office juggernaut would have gone from its summer run into a very golden end, all thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio and his band of mind thieves.

2012 - The HelpThe "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking" category would have been hard pressed to find another film as qualified for the win as The Help. Not only was it the highest performing nominee at the domestic market for 2012's top honors, but it also would have been a big win for diversity, with the female-centric story about race relations occupying a Goldilocks zone of Oscar prestige and public consciousness. Seeing as the film already had one nomination for Best Picture, and three nominations in the acting field, it would have been an easy trophy to hand out, in the name of awarding the film on its total merits, and public support.

2013 - LincolnIt might surprise you to see that Steven Spielberg's Lincoln could beat something like, say, Django Unchained in the award for "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking." Or at least, it would until you break down the fact that Spielberg's long-gestating adaptation of Team of Rivals actually outgrossed Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti western tribute by a solid $20 million. Of course, it also helps that Spielberg is a known name with The Academy (moreso than Tarantino, even), and with Daniel Day Lewis' win for Best Actor clearly showing the film as an Oscar voter favorite, not all the fake blood in the world could have triumphed over this tale of the human spirit and political wrangling.

2014 - The Wolf Of Wall Street2014 is one of those easy years to peg in this hypothetical category, as The Wolf of Wall Street would definitely have brought home the "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking" prize, as this Scorseseian madhouse of highly quotable nature was making waves with audiences as a raucous adventure through late stage Capitalism and excess that was just too fun to go home empty handed. It's hard to tell if Leonardo DiCaprio could have benefitted from this sort of attention, but it's not hard to see that the infamy and fond regard the film had gained through awards season paying off.

2015 - American SniperBirdman, or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was a pretty surprising winner for the Best Picture honors at 2015's Oscar ceremony. Some folks scratched their heads, while others cheered out of supportive surprise. And yet, it felt like all the buzz surrounding that year's crop of films couldn't drown out the American public's slow, but eventually tremendous warming to Clint Eastwood's American Sniper. The tragic but inspiring true story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) and his life in and out of combat, its success at the box office, as well as the pedigree of Eastwood's directorial career, would have given this film a clear shot to winning the popular Oscar trophy.

2016 - Mad Max: Fury RoadIf there are two films that highlight the more beneficial side to having an award like "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking" exist, The Dark Knight is the first, and Mad Max: Fury Road is the second. A huge winner in 2016's technical awards, capping off director George Miller's post-apocalyptic epic with a popular Oscar could have really blown the doors open for genre filmmaking at The Oscars. Considering the films that have preceded this most obvious winner, it wouldn't be a category of ill repute, and at this point the audience would probably be paying more attention to the popular pick rather than the Best Picture-crowned winner. Though, if anyone at Miller's age can make a film so progressive that it get the internet to agree it should have won, as well as a film so technically kick-ass that it makes most blockbusters look like LEGO fan films, then surely that's worthy of great notice.

2017 - La La LandRight about now, Warren Beatty would have been vindicated, as his mistakenly reading La La Land as the Best Picture of 2017 would have merely been a swapping of envelopes between it and the real Best Picture of that year, Moonlight. While director Barry Jenkins' film would have still taken that top prize, Damian Chazelle's ode to jazz and Jacques Demy would have most definitely taken the popular trophy of the year. No other film would have come close to winning the hearts and minds of the world so effectively that for a time, everyone not only expected it to win Best Picture, they would have totally been chill with it. With Moonlight and La La Land firmly at the top of the ranks this time out, the two sides of the Oscar voting pool's rationale would be on full display, and all would have been right with the world.

2018 - Get OutHere's an interesting thought: would The Shape of Water still have won the Best Picture prize if like "Best Achievement in Popular Filmmaking" was in play? The result we ended up getting would have probably still held in this alternative universe, but it would have more than likely still been a toss up between it and writer/director Jordan Peele's Get Out winning in the popularity race. Through almost a decade of this hypothetical history, The Academy would still more than likely not be over its genre bias, which would still result in the very Old Hollywood / progressive fable storytelling of Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor's successful script taking the top prize. But this is that third film that epitomizes the best case scenario of this category, as Jordan Peele's film would have two top notch Oscars under its belt, further emboldening him and his collaborators in future endeavors.

Looks Like Brian May Thinks A Bohemian Rhapsody Sequel Is Possible

Looks Like Brian May Thinks A Bohemian Rhapsody Sequel Is Possible

Bohemian Rhapsody is already the most successful musical biopic in movie history, and now it's started to add awards to its list of accolades. If this were any other movie you would fully expect talk of sequels to be rampant, but considering the story the movie tells, such a thing would seem impossible, right? Well, maybe not. Queen's Brian May who helped produce the movie suggests that, who knows, maybe a sequel could happen. According to May...

No. I think there's a natural culmination there. And that has pretty much always been the case, from the earliest scripts. We felt that was the pinnacle -- despite what some people have said in the press, who know fuck-all about it. Somebody who shall be nameless said: 'Oh, they're going to portray Freddie dying in the middle of the movie, and then the rest of it is gonna be about life without Freddie.' Well, complete bullshit. This is all about Freddie, and I think Live Aid is a good point to leave it. Who knows, there might be a sequel [laughs].

While Brian May laughs at the idea of a sequel, he does ultimately make the suggestion and while he says that Live Aid was the right place to leave the story of Bohemian Rhapsody, that wasn't the actual end of Queen or even Freddie Mercury, so there is technically more story to tell.

Having said that, Brian May completely discounts the claim that there was ever a plan for Freddie Mercury to die in the middle of Bohemian Rhapsody and for the remainder of the film to follow the living members of Queen after his death. The person that Brian May won't name to Louder is Sacha Baron Cohen, who had previously been attached to play Mercury. He says that part of the reason he left the project was because of a script that saw Mercury die in the middle of the story.

While Freddie Mercury doesn't die in the middle of Bohemian Rhapsody, any sequel to it would likely see the character pass away early in the story, so the character would probably die in the middle of the next film. Live Aid took place in 1985 and Mercury died in 1991 so if Mercury would survive a sequel until the end, the entire movie could only cover six years, while Bohemian Rhapsody covered a period more than twice that long.

Bohemian Rhapsody's success notwithstanding, a sequel seems unlikely. The movie covered most of the major aspects of Freddie's life as well as the best of Queen's music, even the songs that were chronologically out of order. There doesn't seem to be much left to do, though I suppose we'll have to wait and see to be truly sure.

The Top 10 Movies Of 2018, According to Dirk

The Top 10 Movies Of 2018, According to Dirk

Coming up with a top 10 list is, by its very nature, a subjective exercise. While it's fairly easy to compare, say, two action films, and decide which one you liked better, how does one compare the best action movie you saw in a year with the best drama or the best comedy? Which one is truly better? While there is certainly some criteria that exists across all genres, so much of what makes a particular sort of movie good is exclusive to that kind of movie. And yet, it's the end of the year, and that means it's time to put every movie I saw in 2018 on a list, and then focus on the best.

In the end, the final categorization was easier than I expected. To be clear, there are some stellar movies that aren't on this list. The Fred Rogers documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor had me ugly crying on an overnight flight to New Zealand. I absolutely reveled in the viciousness of Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone in The Favourite. I sat in utter shock at the ending of Avengers: Infinity War, and yet, they're nowhere to be found here. Maybe this order could change slightly if I thought about it a bit longer. For now, we'll go with it. Here are my 10 favorite movies of 2018. Let me know how this list stacks up to yours in the comments below.

10. Sorry to Bother YouWhen I saw Sorry to Bother You over the summer I figured it was a shoo-in for the year's top 10, and yet, it just barely squeaks in at the bottom of the list (just ahead of The Favourite if you're keeping score). It was just such a unique, original, and weird as fuck movie. You don't have to watch as many movies in a year as I do for most films to be predictable as hell, so when Sorry to Bother You pulls the most crazy original plot twist in the history of plot twists, you have to respect the project.

Boots Riley's script is smart and fun and makes you laugh uncomfortably throughout. The idea of crowd-sourced indentured servitude in the "gig economy" is the sort of idea that, once you think about it, you realize maybe isn't quite as insane as it should be. And how can you not respect a film that includes Tessa Thompson making a performance art reference to Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon?

9. Paddington 2The original Paddington was a film I saw in theaters almost by accident, but it was one of the happiest accidents in recent memory. Truly a joy of a film from start to finish. Paddington 2 somehow does the impossible, it improves on the original in every conceivable way and makes a movie that isn't just funny and heartwarming, but truly special.

Hugh Grant's turn as the film's villain deserves special recognition. Nobody is having quite as much fun watching this movie as he appears to have had making it. Having said that, every member of the cast is fully committed to making sure the audience is on board with Paddington 2 's unflinching optimism and they all succeed. For such a simple film, it is visually stunning as well.

8. A Quiet PlaceIn an era where so many movies are sequels to stories based on comic books, there was possibly no film braver in 2018 than A Quiet Place. An original concept with a wild conceit meant there would be next to no dialogue for the entire run of the film. If this gamble didn't pay off, the movie could have failed completely.

Luckily, for both director John Krasinski and everybody who went to see this massive hit, it all works perfectly. Not only is A Quiet Place a great movie in its own right, but it makes the actual watching of the film part of the experience. The lack of dialogue means the actors have to step up their performances in other ways, and every performer does just that. The simple sound design is actually an incredible technical achievement, which absorbed me into the story in a way few movies have.

7. If Beale Street Could TalkThe follow-up to Best Picture Winner Moonlight by director Barry Jenkins was always going to be a movie that people had their eye on. Whether or not If Beale Street Could Talk wins as many awards as Jenkins' previous effort still remains to be seen, but there's little question that he has crafted another beautiful movie that is having a big affect on audiences.

The broader social themes of the film, including a black woman forced to go through a pregnancy alone since her boyfriend is in jail for a crime he did not commit, are obvious. But what sets If Beale Street Could Talk apart is that it isn't just about the message, it's about the people. A pair of powerful performances from Stephen James and KiKi Layne anchor the film and give faces to those broader concepts. At its heart, Beale Street is a romance, and like all great loves, it comes with its share of pain.

6. AnnihilationThe best thing I can say about Alex Garland's Annihilation is that the movie came out almost a year ago and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. On the surface, it's a cerebral science fiction movie about an alien presence arriving on Earth. The Shimmer is a beautiful place to get lost and the journey of our team of heroines is equal parts mesmerizing and terrifying.

Of course, as with everything Alex Garland has done, Annihilation isn't really about what you see on screen It's a metaphorical film that asks deeper questions about identity and trauma. I know Annihilation frustrated a lot of people with its seeming ambiguity, but sometimes art is designed simply to make you think rather than tell a straightforward story.

5. Black PantherLike most movie fans, I enjoy the hell out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. I was in awe of the epic experience that was Avengers: Infinity War as much as anybody, but when I really stop to consider the three Marvel movies that came out this year, there's only one that really belongs on this list.

Black Panther was a revelation. At once, an exciting comic book action movie, but also so much more than that. Ryan Coogler gave us a perspective on the superhero genre that nobody had before, and few others ever could. It wasn't simply the welcome diversity that Black Panther brought to the big screen that made it special. It was what comes along for the ride because of that diversity. Black Panther has a tone, a point-of-view, and a feel all its own which makes it one of the best MCU movies to date and clearly one of the best films of the year.

4. The Hate U GiveThe Hate U Give is one of several movies that came out in 2018 that focuses on race relations in America. What makes this one standout is that it's based on a YA novel, making the perspective and the voice very different from its contemporaries. The perspective of youth gives the movie a rawness that many other films simply don't have. I left the theater seriously contemplating where I might have stood if a firestorm like this one came down around me. The best films don't just ask the hard questions, they leave us trying to find the answers.

However, the movie isn't simply about the cycle of racism and violence that permeates the world we live in. It's about the optimistic idea that maybe someday it will be broken. Amandla Stenberg gives a radiant performance that belongs among the best given this year.

3. ViceGiven the divisive response to Vice among critics, this choice will clearly not sit well with everybody, but Vice was absolutely one of the most exceptional films I saw this year. Regardless of what you think of the film's subject matter, former Vice President Dick Cheney, Christian Bale absolutely transforms himself in the title role and Amy Adams gives an Oscar-caliber performance as Cheney's wife Lynne.

Those two performances alone make Vice a great film. But in the same way that Adam McKay's previous effort, The Big Short, had a style and structure which made the movie fun and entertaining while dealing with serious and obtuse financial issues, Vice plays similar games with politics. Vice doesn't simply know it's a movie, it revels in the fact. The film will likely infuriate you to varying degrees regardless of your political affiliation, but it will also keep you laughing while you're screaming inside.

2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseWhat is there to say that hasn't already been said about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? It's the best superhero movie of the year. It's the best animated movie of the year. It's the best Spider-Man movie, probably ever. It's a visually stunning feast for the eyes. It's a movie that has the potential to have great power, and it is more than willing to accept responsibility.

Spider-Man has found his true home in animation because, even with everything modern filmmaking can do with CGI, it still can't do that, and Spider-Man needs that to fully make the leap from the page to the screen. It's a movie that has everything, and every possible version of the wall-crawler you could want. Spider-Verse elevates the art of animation in ways we haven't seen since Pixar first took the screen. The bar has been raised for the technology as well as the genre. Time for everybody to up their game.

1. Mary Poppins ReturnsFor those that know me, my number one movie of the year will surprise literally nobody. It's about as "on brand" as I could be. So much so that I seriously considered flipping the top two selections if only to not be "that guy." Mary Poppins Returns was certainly my most anticipated movie of the year going into 2018, but the thing was, while I was looking forward to it, I was also terrified of it. I couldn't believe that a sequel to a movie like Mary Poppins could possibly be as good as it needed to be. How do you replace Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke? How do you make new music that's as good? How do you make a worthy sequel and not a poor carbon copy? Everything was actually against this movie being any good.

And that's why it has to be the number one movie of the year for me. The bar was set so high, and Mary Poppins Returns didn't simply clear it, it grabbed an umbrella and floated over it effortlessly with the confidence of, well, Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt is absolutely magical in a role that will define Mary Poppins for a new generation. It is both an homage to the original and steadfastly its own story. I still can't believe it worked. It's the best movie of 2018.
